The incident allegedly occurred last Saturday when the woman, surnamed Zhuo, went to her younger brother’s home to request her share of the inheritance.
Her brother’s wife purportedly took out a hammer and also wanted to spray her with pesticide while her brother allegedly pushed her down the stairs upon hearing her intentions. She then called the police, who arrived to mediate.
Zhuo explained that the inheritance conflict emerged after their father, who ran a neighborhood grocery store, died three years ago at age 94, according to Mothership.
With the oldest daughter and youngest son deceased, Zhuo’s surviving siblings include two elder sisters, an elder brother, a younger brother, and a younger sister.
Though Zhuo and her siblings had all helped with their father’s business, she claims he excluded his daughters from the inheritance. His cash savings, purportedly worth over S$1 million, were reportedly passed to her elder and younger brothers. The latter allegedly also received a residential property.
Zhuo expressed deep disappointment over the situation, saying she sacrificed her education in her youth to support her parents and their business.
“When I was five or six years old, I began helping out with my parents by selling chickens, ducks, eggs, and economy rice. I did not have the opportunity to pursue my education and only left to make a living in my 20s,” Zhuo told Shin Min Daily News, adding that she did not even have Central Provident Fund savings. CPF is Singapore’s mandatory social security savings scheme.
“I think the money should be distributed equally. After all, we helped our family run the business when we were young.”
Unhappy with how the inheritance was distributed, she confronted her younger brother. The resulting incident purportedly left her hands and feet bruised and her head swollen.
Responding to the allegations, her younger brother’s family said Zhuo had fallen down the stairs on her own, according to The New Paper.
Her brother said they had submitted surveillance footage to the police and planned to seek a personal protection order to bar Zhuo from returning to his home.
